Philip Allan Donakowski

Philip Allan “Moe” Donakowski, 83, of Alpena, passed away peacefully at Precious Days AFC on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022 with his loving daughter at his side. Philip was a kind, courageous, and loving man that will be dearly missed by many. He was born on Oct. 12, 1939 to the late Philip and Myrtle (Minton) Donakowski in Alpena. He was a graduate of Catholic Central as well as Alpena Community College. In 1961 Philip served his country in the United States Navy and sailed aboard the USS Rock submarine. After two years in the Navy, Philip was home on leave and proposed to Barbara Hanna. They were married on June 6, 1964 and started their family with a son Philip James in San Diego, CA. in 1965. A few years later they made their way to Alpena where Philip began working at Stoneport and they welcomed a second child, Constance. After 28 years he retired from Stoneport due to being diagnosed with Mesothelioma. Being one who would never give up, Philip learned to communicate in different ways with his family and live as quality of life as he could.

There were many things in life that Philip enjoyed such as playing sports and swimming in his younger years, gardening, hunting, and just being outdoors in general. He also loved to spend time with family at his camps in Hawks, and Metz. What brought him the greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughter, Annie Lynn Hoppe, they loved to play hide and seek for hours.

Philip is survived by his daughter, Constance “Connie” (Jeremiah) Hoppe, granddaughter, Annie Lynn Hoppe, a sister, Patricia Hanna, three brothers, Dan (Mary Ann), Richard (Sherry), and Robert (Sue), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Philip James Donakowski, a brother, Gerald Donakowski, and brother-in-law, Clarence Hanna.

Family will receive friends for visitation at Karpus Hunter & Ross Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. with military honors accorded by the US Navy and VFW Post 2496 starting at 7:00 P.M. followed by a parish prayer service with Deacon Michael Roy officiating. Visitation will continue at St. Bernard Catholic Church of All Saints Parish on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023 from 10:00 A.M. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Michael Lingaur as celebrant. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Children International.
